To the United States House of Representatives, the United States Senate, and the President of the United States:
It is our right as Americans to marry for love without being forced to choose between marriage and our country.
That’s why the only numerically unlimited category includes the spouses of US citizens.
That’s why, through most of our history, a spouse’s inadmissibility was balanced against the right of a US citizen to sponsor their husband or wife.
That’s why this balance, dismantled in 1996, should be restored.
Today, nearly two million US citizens have been separated, or may be separated, from their husbands or wives. We want these families to be made whole. They are our friends, our neighbors, our families, and your constituents.
The bi-partisan American Families United Act would restore a common-sense balancing test to preserve the unity of American families in the United States.
Please support American Families United Act through each stage of the legislative process, until it is passed into law.
I have been waiting for almost 4 years. We have spent over 20,000 trying to get my husband’s papers. He has no criminal record and has been here 20 years. Now he is looking at removal. This will break up our family. He is a step dad and a grandfather. I have health issues but I continue to work to be able to fight this battle. We were approved the I130 and we applied for the I485 . He completed everything medical, finger prints, and interview. He was issued a social security card and work permit while it was pending. Then they denied saying he didn’t qualify for that waiver and now waiting court date for removal. They said the work permit and social no longer could be used. We filed another form and waiting to file a 601a only to be told now we can’t due to the removal. We can only file a 601a if the removal is dismissed. We are told if he is removed then I will have to remain here and file a 601b. They say if I die before we get his papers then his case will be dismissed. All the time and money we have put into this. He has NEVER been detained or deported. The path should not be this hard for anyone. I won’t be able to go with him. I need doctors and am on medicine for life. I won’t be able to get the healthcare I need in Mexico. I am told I can qualify for disability but I don’t try due to the cost it takes to try to get his papers. I need insurance to see my doctor’s. I only pray for change. Change for not only my story but many others. We have lived in fear for 13 years. No one should have to worry about your spouse leaving the home and taken away from your family. No one should have to choose between a loved one and your life your country. We shouldn’t have to choose to leave the only country we know and go live in another country just to be with our spouse. Our children and grandchildren taken away not only from father’s but their mothers, their grandparents. The separation has to stop. There has to be a better way . I have tried to contact Washington and my governor. Only to NEVER hear anything from anyone. I feel we are a group that no one hears and many that are scared to come forward scared of deportation to even speak their voice. It feels like no one hears us. No one listens to our stories our sacrifices. All of us have families. Shouldn’t we have a right to love someone for who they are rather than their legal status? Shouldn’t children be allowed to be with both parents. I wasn’t able to have children with my husband but he is a step father and now a grandfather who is loved so much. My grandkids deserve a right to know their papa. I should have a right to remain with my husband and pray to grow old with him in the USA.
We pray to God everyday to keep us safe. We pray to God that change will come soon. We Thank God everyday for each other and no matter what we are blessed to have another day. 🙏 Changing the laws will only relieve the stress and fear we live with everyday and for years.
Thank you for your time.
