Newly-elected President Joe Biden promised during his campaign, if he won the election, to immediately order a 100-day moratorium on deportations. He made good on that promise. But just a few days later, Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton sought a restraining order to halt Biden’s executive order. A federal judge granted Paxton the restraining order.
This action foreshadows the battle Democrats may face to get comprehensive immigration reform passed. Biden has proposed a bill that would give the approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. a path to citizenship. Despite the lack of support from Republican congressional members, most Americans from both parties do support that type of legislation. Kali Pliego, Amverican Families United Vice President, states, “We’re in a much better position to have an impact now.”
Pliego is one of 2 million American families of mixed-status — usually with an American citizen spouse and children, and one undocumented spouse. Of particular concern are the “bars” that forbid people who have been deported (or even those who leave voluntarily) from returning for three or ten years, or even for life, depending on circumstances. These bars have caused immense suffering for many American families. President Biden wants to eliminate the bars. But as long as they remain in place, Pliego says, “We live in fear.”
