Today, American Families United (AFU) President Ashley DeAzevedo issued the following statements in response to Donald Trump winning the presidential election:
“The people that the Trump campaign targeted during the election are our loved ones, friends, neighbors, and colleagues—and we remain deeply concerned that Donald Trump will fulfill his promise of mass deportations, unnecessarily separating spouses of U.S. citizens.
“There are 1.1 million noncitizen spouses of U.S. citizens who have lived, worked, and contributed to our country for decades who should be allowed to remain with their families. We will work with members of congress from both parties to bring long overdue relief to American mixed-status families. Additionally, we will actively support legal challenges to any anti-immigrant executive actions by the incoming administration.
“Make no mistake, this community will not shrink or retreat into the shadows. We plan to fight for our families until they all have the dignity they deserve. We will get through this by continuing the work we have always done: defending our families from anyone who threatens their existence. This movement is stronger than we have ever been, and will continue fighting for equality and dismantling our broken immigration systems."
